Book Beginnings on Fridays #5- Before the Crown

Happy Friday! Hope the work week hasn’t been too long for everyone. I’m really excited to be sharing the book that I actually finished not long before writing this post. A huge thanks goes to Harper360 and Netgalley for letting me read an ARC of “Before the Crown” by Flora Harding.

Book Beginnings on Fridays is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Rose City Reader. Bloggers and readers alike post a sentence or so from the book they are currently enjoying as well as any thoughts that sentence inspired.

Plot Summary:

As war rages across the world, Princess Elizabeth comes face to face with the dashing naval officer she first met in London nine years before.

One of the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy, Philip represents everything she has always been taught to avoid. Instability. Audacity. Adventure.

But when the king learns of their relationship, the suitability of the foreign prince is questioned by all at court.

He is the risk she has never been allowed to take. The risk not even the shadow of the crown will stop her from taking… (Goodreads, 2021).

Intro:

He’s not there. Elizabeth has her eye pressed to the chink in the curtains. The velvet is worn and smells musty. It reeks of mothballs and greasepaint, of old productions carefully rehearsed, suppressed giggles and first night nerves.

Comments:

Reading these first few sentences left me with a lot of questions. I wanted to know if Prince Philip was the “he” in question and I also wanted to know where in the world the then Princess Elizabeth was. A beginning like this builds anticipation for the rest of the story, which in my opinion is a great way to start any book. For some reason this beginning also struck me as girlish, which is not something that I would typically associate with the Queen of England.

Let me know what you thought of the summary and the first few sentences. Would you keep reading?

  1. This seems a timely read given Prince Phillip’s passing. I do love historical fiction and like the excerpts you shared. I am definitely interested in reading this one. I hope you enjoyed it! Have a great weekend!

    1. Thank you! This one has been hanging out in my TBR for a bit but it just seemed kind of appropriate to read it now. I really enjoyed it, the author did a great job giving us a glimpse inside the minds of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip so to speak. Wishing you a great weekend as well!
