Goodreads Monday #3- Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Hope all of you had a good weekend. Mine was pretty action packed. My boyfriend and I spent Saturday wandering around NYC and discovered a couple of cool spots and Sunday I spent with my parents doing a bit of shopping.

I’m back again with Goodreads Monday! This is a weekly meme where anyone can choose to highlight a book from their Goodreads TBR and was originally created by Lauren’s Page Turners.

For this week’s Goodreads Monday I will be talking about “Red Rising” by Pierce Brown. This is another book that has been on my TBR list and that I’m finally getting around to reading.

Plot Summary:

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so (Goodreads, 2014).

So this is my second time highlighting a book that has been on my TBR for a while. I think many people might be able to relate to adding books to their TBR and then getting sidetracked by more recent releases. There are just so many fantastic books coming out all the time that it’s hard not to be.

I’ve been seeing Red Rising for years at bookstores and it would always catch my eye, but for some reason I just never got around to buying it. I think part of what may have discouraged me was that it is dystopian fantasy and that is not usually my go to subgenre. In fact the only dystopian fantasy that I really enjoyed was Divergent and the ending of that one just gutted me.

A couple of weeks ago one of the bookstagrammers I follow posted about doing a readalong for Red Rising and I decided that it was finally time to get myself a copy and give this book a try. I have pretty high expectations for this one so I really hope that it lives up to them and I’m able to continue with the rest of the series.

Have your read Red Rising or heard anything about this series? What are your thoughts on dystopian fantasy?
